When is Play Therapy appropriate?
Play Therapy can be effective for a whole range of children and adolescents (4-16 years) who have had experienced specific trauma such as:
- a disrupted lifestyle through moving or other upset
- a severe loss or bereavement
- accident or illness
- physical disability
- problems with a sibling or another family member
- abuse
- neglect
Play therapy can also be suitable for children who have ongoing problems at home, school or other areas of their life such as:
- problems with relationships
- being bullied
- wetting, soiling, smearing
- eating disorders
- sleeping disorders
- immature behaviour
- inappropriate emotional responses
- being withdrawn
- temper tantrums, violent outbursts
- chaotic and messy, or unnaturally 'fussy'
- self-harm, hurting animals or smaller children
- school refusal
- sexualised behaviour, sexual acting out
