When is Play Therapy appropriate?

Play Therapy can be effective for a whole range of children and adolescents (4-16 years) who have had experienced specific trauma such as:

  • a disrupted lifestyle through moving or other upset
  • a severe loss or bereavement
  • accident or illness
  • physical disability
  • problems with a sibling or another family member
  • abuse
  • neglect

Play therapy can also be suitable for children who have ongoing problems at home, school or other areas of their life such as:

  • problems with relationships
  • being bullied
  • wetting, soiling, smearing
  • eating disorders
  • sleeping disorders
  • immature behaviour
  • inappropriate emotional responses
  • being withdrawn
  • temper tantrums, violent outbursts
  • chaotic and messy, or unnaturally 'fussy'
  • self-harm, hurting animals or smaller children
  • school refusal
  • sexualised behaviour, sexual acting out
